Six signs of a toxic workplace

Your workplace culture should never be an afterthought; it will have repercussions that affect your organisation’s bottom line. So how can you tell whether you have a toxic workplace or not? Well, there are red flags to look for.

Poor leadership and management

One of the indicators is the lack of strong management and leadership. This includes managers who are rude or aggressive; micromanagement of employees; failure to provide the necessary support; and an absence of clear direction.

Low morale and high turnover

If the environment within your organisation is one in which employees are scared of failure, this is toxic. That kind of low morale among staff usually leads to retention difficulties, with high staff turnover being another obvious indicator.

Poor communication

Poor and/or inconsistent lines of communication are a sign of workplace toxicity. This means managers do not communicate clearly what is needed and the feedback of employees is not regularly sought. It results in reduced employee engagement.

Lack of boundaries

A healthy workplace enables employees to achieve a balance between work and home life. If your employees frequently feel pressured to work long hours and weekends, the boundaries have become blurred. That shows the culture is unhealthy.

Exclusion and hostility

A positive workplace culture is one where everyone feels included and welcome. By contrast, a toxic culture allows cliques to develop and individuals to be ostracised or bullied. This can also lead to outright discrimination.

Poor recognition

If employees do not receive recognition for good work, they become disillusioned and lacking in motivation. A healthy culture recognises and rewards people for their efforts.

Consequences of a toxic workplace

No growth

Everything from low morale and high staff turnover to lack of engagement will result in your organisation failing to achieve real growth.

Burnout

An unhappy atmosphere and excessive work demands result in physical and mental burnout among employees.

Legal issues

Bullying or discrimination can lead to your organisation facing legal action by employees.
