Employees missing holiday time due to work pressures

Research has found that one fifth of employees in the UK are missing out on part of their holiday entitlement so that they can keep up with their workload.

Timetastic conducted a study in which it surveyed 6,000 employees across the country. Now this company, which helps with the management of employee leave, has published the results. They show that 21% are taking less holiday time that they are entitled to because of the amount of pressure they feel to keep working. That amounts to one fifth of them.

Just 18% said that they had used up all of their holiday time come the end of each year, while over one quarter ended up with more than two weeks that they had not taken. In terms of age, it is older employees who are more likely to skip holidays to stay on top of their workload.

This is a problem for companies, because failing to take enough time off leaves employees more vulnerable to mental health problems and burnout. They need an HR department to set clear policies regarding holiday time, and to develop a culture that supports a healthy balance between work and life. That kind of culture shift is not easy, but a dedicated employee relations consultant in Hertfordshire can be a big help.

They also need those in more senior positions to set the right example, though. Another finding from the Timetastic research was that supervisors and middle managers are the ones most likely to miss holidays. A total of 26% of these employees said that they struggled to walk away completely.
